Ancient Greek Politics And War

During the time of Age of Legends the Greeks were experimenting with many forms of Government. Democratic Athens is held up as an ideal but there were plenty of tyrants and oligarchs running Ancient Greek city states. Many rulers had much to fear from their own people but by waging war on rival cities the leaders could gain prestige and, more importantly, wealth. The more money earned through conquest, the less likely the people were to exile their rulers.
