Archetypes

New players and those in a hurry are recommended to use the archetypes and the Quick Start Rules. Each of the eleven archetypes has three variants themed around different settings to give them a particular feel or style but they are not limited to those settings. Archetypes are just the starting point for character generation and each archetype and variant has plenty of scope for customisation. The choice of third path is entirely open and more experienced players may wish to fine-tune the selection of advantages.

Big Hearted

Some people simply care more than others and find themselves looking after people. For some this turns into a full time career in medicine but others focus their efforts on family, friends, animals or good causes. Big hearted characters can turn up in almost any situation including the military.

Everybody Knows Your Name

Famous or infamous, local hero or worldwide superstar, it does not matter; some people have an 'image' and attitude. They expect to be treated better than ordinary folks and have an ego the size of a planet. Famous people present great role playing opportunities, letting players be divas and explore the lifestyle of the rich and famous. They suit particular styles of games where the fame can be a cover or give them access to parts of the world closed to the general public.

Explorer

With cheap travel and readily available equipment, many modern explorers are often hobbyists who take holidays in extreme places. To survive, they need practical skills and a strong physique but they also need social skills for dealing with local people. Explorer characters can slot into many genres but work better in the less realistic settings. There are not many opportunities to use survival skills when working part-time in a downtown coffee shop.

Independent people chart their own course through life. They may be drifters or loners but they are also just as likely to be found in social groups. They are happy to work with others when convenient or to work alone if needed. Independents make good characters as they tend to be competent and capable of looking after themselves.

Military Veteran

Whether they are an old grizzled veteran of Korea or Vietnam or a survivor of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq still coming to terms with the physical and emotional scars, veterans make great characters. They have lots of useful skills but they also have great possibilities for creating interesting personalities and back stories. After serving in the military veterans can end up in any walk of life, from the President to a hobo, allowing a veteran to appear in any genre or setting.

News Person

Bloggers, TV anchor people, camera operators and investigative journalists make great characters because it is their job to stick their nose into other people's business. They also have an excuse for being at the scene of murders or disasters which can be handy when the police start wondering who is responsible. News people are good at finding information but generally lack the skills to do anything with it.

Ordinary Joe / Jane

The sort of person who does jobs which involve getting your hands dirty. They will often be found working anti-social hours and stay at their post when the storm hits. Focusing on practical skills and physical action they make good all-round characters. Depending on the nature of the game, the third path should extend their practical and combat skill or give access to social and inter-personal skills.

Some people are all about working with other people. Salesmen, politicians and diplomats all know the secret of making friends and influencing people. They make great characters for games with a strong social element but are weak in practical abilities. Select a third path which expands their options in these areas.

Ruthless Bastard

Ruthless bastards can be found at either the top or the bottom of society. Their lack of empathy and concern for others coupled with an over-inflated sense of self-importance and ego means they end up in prison, on Wall Street or sometimes both. The line between their behaviour and mental illness is very thin. Care should be taken when selecting this archetype as they are not team players.

Wrong Side of the Law

Some people always find themselves on the wrong side of the law. They are not bad people, they don't hurt anyone, it is just their skills and abilities are only suitable for a life of crime. Characters on the wrong side of the law have access to equipment, people and places that more straitlaced characters do not and are a useful addition to any party of adventures.
