28 Heroines – Karine Descoteaux

Karine knows that she only has a few years left.  The premonition was quite clear; on midsummer’s eve when the moon is full her heart will fail.  At first she raged against the dream. Blind and frail she might be but she still served her community.  A dozen villages scattered over thrice as many hills that depend on her for their rituals and folk memory.  Four hundred lives that would be in danger without Karine’s magic to protect them.

28 Heroines

RPG character inspiration for each day in February. Heroines with personality, depth and a problem to resolve.

When her anger and fear calmed, Karine realised that all that remained was for her to find an apprentice. Someone who take up her role a protector and healer. In forty years of craft she had not found a local with the spark. It would be a great risk for her to travel beyond the hills into lands she had not visited since her youth. Though death was not waiting for her on the road, her wards would suffer in her absence.

On the first summer she went North but the sea people would not even let her on their city boats.  Last summer’s trip west brought her to the great cities of Ortr and a glimmer of hope in the crowds that faltered in disinterest and disbelieve. This summer she makes ready to go east and cross the Homeless River into the elven forests. Perhaps their seers will help her avoid a trip into the southern mountains.
